Recycling in an apartment complex is easy to do. Simply follow these steps:
- Collect all items that are considered "recyclable".
- Take the recyclables to the "recycling station" in your building. (It will normally consist of 2 or more carts, usually located where the garbage is dropped off).
- Place the recyclables in the appropriate cart (see below for details).
- Remember, NO plastic bags in the recycling carts please. (Plastic bags contaminate the recyclables).
- Recyclables can be collected in paper bags, cardboard boxes, laundry baskets, etc. in your apartment and carried down to the recycling station. Home Hardware sells a mini blue box container that is the perfect size for an apartment unit.

What and How to Recycle
PAPER CART (for all Paper Products)
Place items LOOSE in the appropriate carts. Not in plastic bags, please! Remove all plastic inserts or wrappers from the newspaper.
- Newspaper & Inserts
- Magazines, Flyers, Office paper, Junk Mail, Catalogues and Phone Books
- Envelopes, Gift Cards and Gift wrap (not foil wrap)
- Boxboard items such as Cereal, Cracker, Tissue, Pasta & Cookie boxes.
- Paper tubes, Paper bags, Paper egg cartons (not plastic or Styrofoam).
- Cardboard (small quantities only broken down and placed beside the carts, 30"x30" bundled no larger than 8") Note: Cardboard should only be placed out with your recyclables. Never in your garbage.
CONTAINERS CART (All Containers, Bottles & Cans)
Glass bottles and jars
- Pop Cans
- Juice Cans
- Food Cans (empty and rinse cans to discourage animal visitors)
- Aerosol Cans (empty, discard lid)
- Paint & Spray Cans (must be empty!)
- Plastic bottles & Jugs (empty containers)
- Tubs & Lids (empty tubs)
Contamination Is A Major Problem for Apartment Recycling Programs.
It is very important that the proper materials be placed in each recycling cart. If garbage or mixed recyclables are put into the carts, the entire load becomes contaminated and cannot be recycled.
