When is my Recycling collection day?

If you have not received a calendar by the end of February, you may contact us with your mailing address to receive one or pick up your copy at your local Municipal Office. Your Essex County recycling calendar is also posted on this website for your convenience (Calendar Page).
  • Windsor residents, please contact the City of Windsor Public Works at (519) 974-1010.

I just moved into the area, how do I get a Blue or Red Box and begin recycling?
  • You may be eligible for your FIRST Recycle Boxes as a new resident in the area. If you have moved into the County of Essex, contact the Recycling Centre at 1-800-265-9625. If you have moved to the City of Windsor call (519) 974-1010. Extra or replacement Blue Boxes and Red Boxes are available at your local HOME HARDWARE store for $6.00 each. Recycling information is available on this web site or by contacting our Waste Reduction Hotline at 1-800-563-3377 (Essex County & Windsor residents only).

Some plastic containers with a recycling symbol were left in my Blue Box after collection, Why?
  • The Plastics industry identify all their products with the recycling loop with a number in the center to indicate the type of plastic. These symbols do not automatically mean that the plastic goes into your recycle box. There are seven types of plastic but not all plastics are recycled in all areas. Currently #1 PET and #2 HDPE are the most marketable plastics in Essex County and the City of Windsor.
  • The rule of thumb to help you remember what plastic container is recyclable is to CHECK THE NECK. Plastic containers with a NARROW neck opening (bottles and jugs) should be placed in your Blue Box for recycling. Containers with a wide opening such as plastic tubs, jars, trays, cups etc. are NOT recyclable in Essex-Windsor.
  • For further information on the types of Plastics check our PLASTICS web page available on this site.

Can I put window glass in my Blue Box for collection?
  • NO. Window glass is not recyclable in this area. Contact your municipal office for advice on how it should be placed out for garbage collection. If collection is not available in your area, you may use one of the Public Drop Off Depots. Click on one of the icons on the side bar for web pages on this site with detailed information.
  • Please note: BROKEN GLASS is also not acceptable in your Blue Box. Unlike the garbage collection crew, our recycle drivers must handle the recyclables in order to sort them. If you place broken recyclable glass in the Blue Box, all your recyclables may be left behind to avoid injury to the driver.

Why do my Recycle Boxes have to be at the curb by 7:00 AM?
  • In the County of Essex, routes are constantly revised. As a result drivers may service your area earlier or later on any given week. To maintain consistency and ensure that your Blue Box and Red Box is emptied on your recycling day they must be out before the drivers begin their routes at 7:00 a.m. Remember Red and Blue go out as two (same day, same time).

If you live in the City of Windsor your Blue Box is required to be out earlier than the County (6:00 a.m.) Call (519) 974-1010 for more information

Why was my used motor oil not collected on my recycling day?
  • Used motor oil must be placed in a sealed (screw-on cap) 4 Litre jug (not a plastic beverage container or plastic tub) and clearly labeled USED MOTOR OIL. There is a limit of two containers per household per collection.
  • Sometimes the recycle truck's oil compartment will fill to capacity early in their route and they are unable to collect more oil. Drivers do not intentionally leave behind the oil and do attempt to pick up the properly packaged used motor oil on the next scheduled pick up. The drivers are instructed to pick up oil at the middle of their route the next collection, and at the end of their route the collection after that. This will ensure that all oil is picked up over a six week period.

If you have placed your oil out on two consecutive weeks of collection and it was still not picked up, please call 1-800-265-9625 (Essex County Residents only).

My Yard Waste is not picked up with the rest of my garbage, why and what should I do with it?
  • Each municipality determines their own Yard Waste Collection options. It may be limited to only a couple of collections during the season or none at all. Contact your municipality directly for dates and availability.
  • Yard Waste is NOT garbage. Organics such as small branches, leaves, and grass clippings can be processed by nature into compost. There are several ways to manage your yard waste (backyard composting, grasscycling etc.) suggested throughout this web site, click the icons on the side bar for details.
  • You may drop off your excess yard waste at one of the Public Drop Off Depots. Please remember that plastic bags are NOT suitable containers for yard waste. Use cardboard boxes, paper yard waste bags or reuseable plastic bins. Branches should be cut to less than 4-feet in length and bundled no larger than 2-feet in diameter when placed out for your yard waste collection.

I would like to try compost on my yard and garden, when is EWSWA's compost available?
  • As the area's yard waste is brought to the sites, it is placed in piles and turned on a regular basis for approximately 6 months. This process transforms the yard waste into a dark humus with a distinctive, earthy aroma. It takes some time for the process to be completed and depends on seasonal conditions. When it is ready, screening of the material is arranged before it is ready to offer to the public. We inform the public of it's availability through the media and this website.
  • During the last few years compost has been available in the Spring and Autumn while quantities last. It is sold prebagged, bag your own, and bulk sales (truck or trailer loads). Recently delivery of large loads has been available as well. Call our Waste Reduction Hotline at 1-800-563-3377 for compost costs and delivery fees. Rates and availability are also posted on this web site. Check our COMPOST page for details.

  • Plastic Grocery bags cannot be placed in the recycle boxes. What should I do with them?
    • Do not place your recyclables in Plastic Grocery Bags. Use paper grocery bags or boxboard to gather loose paper products together.
    • Some grocery stores have set up drop off areas in their stores for plastic grocery bags. Currently the A&P Grocery Store in Leamington and the A&P Grocery at Central & Tecumseh Roads (Central Mall) have drop off boxes in their stores. The Zehrs Groceries DO NOT accept bags any longer but they do have paper grocery bags.
    • Reusable grocery bags are the most environmentally friendly choice.
    • There are some charitable organizations that will accept clean grocery/plastic bags for their thrift stores. Contact the Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul Thrift stores in your location.
    • Public libraries have also been known to accept plastic bags to give to patrons who borrow books.
