What is the Green Bin Repair & Request (R&R) Program?

This is a new, enhanced service in this region. It is commonly used in new residential waste collection programs, especially when automated collection is used. This is why the EWSWA Green Bin is scanned and linked to an address at delivery, so that it can be tracked for service, warranty issues, etc.

Essentially, if your Green Bin needs a repair such as, but not limited to: a broken wheel, lid, axle, and/or lock, the resident can request for service. If a new home is built or a Green Bin is missing or stolen, a request can also be made.

To put in a request through the R&R Program, please use the following as a guide:

City of Windsor and County of Essex residents can: Call 1-800-563-3377.

Green Tips:

  1. The resident must file the request as noted above. The collection contractor will not file your request.
  2. Write your address on the Green Bin that is delivered to your home in the space provided on the back of the Bin.
  3. If the Green Bin arrives and the lid appears warped, allow it to settle in by placing it in the sun for a couple weeks.
  4. Requests will be serviced within a week of the request being made.

Green Bin Lock - Release Mechanism

The GB Gravity lock does have a special release mechanism on the portion of the lock located on the lid of the Green Bin, however, it may not be suitable in rare situations.

The design of the GB and its components, including the lock were established by benchmarking other municipal programs across Ontario, which is why the EWSWA requested a release mechanism in the design. The EWSWA also included the lock to address concerns as pests are a top concern of residents. There are over 1.5 million bins with locks used across Ontario alone for municipal waste programs to keep pests out and food waste in.

The EWSWA does understand that there may be a rare instance where a homeowner with small children may consider this lock to be a concern for their household and if that is the case, the homeowner can remove the lock, as it's installed with a few simple screws. Residents are encouraged to call our 1-800-563-3377 hotline to discuss and receive support, as the EWSWA does want to support the diversion of food waste for all homeowners.

  • The release is located on the TOP portion of the lock – this is located on the LID.
  • The release is not located on the portion of the lock that is seated on the body of the Green Bin.
  • All you have to do is ‘push in’  on the metal part of the lock (see screen shot on right – red circle) – the emergency release will push in easily.

Warped Lid and/or Lock is not "Clicking" When Engaged?

On delivery of your Green Bin, if the lid is warped and doesn’t sit completely flat, please keep the lid closed and let the Green Bin settle into its new home for a couple of weeks - the sun and heat should help it to settle in nicely.

The warped lid is often due to how the Green Bins were nestled during shipment to efficiently transport 120,000 bins to the region.

If the lid does not close properly or the lock does not “Click” when engaged after this two week settling period, please call the EWSWA at 1-800-563-3377
