A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR YOUR FOOD WASTE

Green Bin It!

By putting food waste in the Green Bin, you can reduce your garbage by up to 50%! Your efforts will help create renewable energy and fertilizer for next year’s crops, and reduce greenhouse gases that come from landfilling organic materials (food waste).
This “How-To” guide will help you get on your way to becoming a Green Superhero!

Use the Green Bin a week before collection begins!

Tips To Get You Started

Tip: Even if the Green Bin is not full, set it out weekly for collection to keep odours in and pests out.

Set-Up Matters

  • Set Kitchen Catcher in a handy spot or repurpose your kitchen garbage for only food waste.
  • Consider using a compostable liner to be tidy
  • Position Green Bin somewhere convenient for use

For Easy Daily Use

  • Before cooking, set your Kitchen Catcher on the counter
  • For fats/oils/grease (FOG)
  • Empty your Kitchen Catcher regularly
  • Clean bins often - your Kitchen Catcher is dishwasher safe
  • Keep all lids closed when not in use

It’s as easy as 1-2-3

Green Bin Your Food Waste!

  1. Line your Kitchen Catcher (optional)
Fill with food waste and organics. Kitchen Catcher is for inside use only; not for curbside collection
  2. When ready, empty contents from Kitchen Catcher into Green Bin. If using a liner, tie liner before dumping into the Green Bin
  3. Set the Green Bin out for weekly collection using the Park-Point-Space method!

Measuring Success

To help you become a Green Superhero, Gold Star or OOPS! stickers may be placed on your Green Bin to let you know how you’re doing. We’ll be tracking participation, as well as how successful residents are in using proper Bin set-out and only placing acceptable materials in the Green Bin. A big “thumbs up” if you receive a Gold Star - it means you’re a Green Superhero!
No registration for this program is required.

OOPS! = We noticed something wrong

OOPS! Sticker - provided if something was wrong. With a list of possible issues and the contact information for EWSWA or 311 (city)
